1920

En 1920 après la guerre on assista à un mouvement de " je m'en foutisme" (Film "The great Gatsby"). Les jeunes étaient en rébellion contre l'hypocrisie antérieure (ils fumaient, buvaient, les filles se coupaient les cheveux, se raccourcissant les jupes, c'était l'époque des excès, de la révolte des jeunes et le début de la "Renaissance noire" où les noirs prenaient conscience de leur situation. Les Poètes s'intéressèrent à la situation des noirs et ainsi que les blancs qui à nouveau redécouvraient leur existence. Dans les années '20 Harlem fut le théâtre d'une activité intellectuelle remarquable et présenta une des périodes les plus fastes de la culture afro américaine (donc la Black renaissance). Les grands orchestres symphoniques commencèrent à jouer l’œuvre des compositeurs noirs, des troupes d'Opéra donnèrent la vedette à des chanteurs de couleur, ils apparaissaient à Broadway au théâtre et dans les ballets. Les musiciens jazz noirs commençaient à se faire une place importante.
